Certifications: when they matter.

Which cloud and Kubernetes certs are worth your time.

What is the role of certifications?

Certifications are formal credentials — AWS Solutions Architect, CKA for Kubernetes, and others — that prove a baseline of knowledge. In DevOps they carry more weight than in some fields, but they are a supplement to demonstrated skill, never a substitute for it.

Why it matters

Certs can genuinely help: they get past some HR filters, they are required by certain consultancies and partners, and studying for them fills knowledge gaps systematically. But chasing them instead of building real systems is a trap. Knowing when a cert is worth the time is a practical career decision.

What to learn

  • Which certs are respected: AWS, CKA/CKAD, Terraform
  • When employers actually require or reward them
  • Certs as structured study versus as proof
  • The opportunity cost of exam prep
  • Pairing a cert with a real project
  • Keeping certs current as they expire
  • Reading whether a target role values them

Common pitfall

Collecting certifications with no hands-on work to back them. Interviewers spot "paper" certifications fast, because the practical questions reveal the gap immediately. A cert paired with a project you actually built is powerful; a cert alone, with nothing you can demonstrate, raises doubt rather than confidence.

Practice

Look up two job postings for roles you want and note which certifications they list as required or preferred. Pick one cert that appears and pair it with a hands-on project that demonstrates the same skills. Done when you can justify the cert against real demand, not just collecting it.

Outcomes

  • Identify which certifications employers actually value.
  • Decide when a cert is worth the opportunity cost.
  • Use certs as structured study, not a skill substitute.
  • Pair any cert with a demonstrable project.
